The 49-year-old from Primorska, who became the 8th head coach, was the assistant in the headquarters of Tomaž Kavčič. The president of the Football Association of Slovenia Radenko Mijatović announced that his goal is to appoint a new head coach as soon as possible, even though he did not rule out the possibility that the Slovenian national team would be led by a temporary selector. A few days ago, Benedejčič has taken the national team in the competition with Austria, Bulgaria, and Malta into the elite part of the qualifications for the European Championship.
Robert Englaro, who was also Kavčič’s assistant, will be helping him with the team. Benedejčič already has eight performances for Slovenian national team in his career. He was the first shooter of the team when he played on June 3, 1992, in Tallinn against Estonia and he scored 1-1. He played for Koper and Olimpija, and he also played in the jersey of Rijeka and Korotan. He was trying out the new head coach position at Interblock.
Slovenia gained only one point in the four matches of the newly formed League of Nations and it is currently at the bottom of European football. The national team has two more matches in November: on November 16, the team will host Norway, and three days later, they will play in Bulgaria. The team will try to avoid being knocked out after the two matches, however, the chances are very small. Euro 2020 will start in March.
